Why Good Things Happen To Bad People

“Why do good things happen to bad people — and so many bad things happen to good people?”
It sometimes feels like we’re living in a perpetual opposite day, where “Love yourself not your neighbor” seems to be the golden rule and “Take and you shall receive” appears to be the principle of abundance. In the self-help/spiritual arena, the pain is felt even more acutely; where’s karma, the law of cause and effect, the law of attraction? if you’re a good human being, good stuff is supposed to happen to you, right?
Wrong.
It’s a common misunderstanding to believe that “human goodness” leads to the experience of human good. In fact, that’s not always — or even often — the case.
Here is the real principle of life: Consciousness is cause.
It’s not so much the actions we take, but the consciousness behind them, that determines our experience. If a greedy person believes they’re worthy or capable of creating wealth, they’ll create it. If a generous and kind person doesn’t feel worthy or abundant, they’ll end up a broke do-gooder.
It’s not personal, it’s principle.
For every area of our life, we have certain set-points. For example, we might feel capable and confident with our work — and hold a strong self-image about it — but simultaneously harbor a limited identity and belief system around wealth. This can create an experience where we do great work, receive abundant kudos and are still underpaid. Or if we manage to increase our paycheck, our expenses increase with it — making us broke at a higher income bracket!
This can also show up in the area of health. A person can do all the right things, eat all the right foods and still end up getting sick — while another person eats whatever they want and hardly has a down day in their life. Don’t you just hate those people?!
Some would argue that this is about genetics. But the latest discoveries in epigenetics reveal that genes don’t control our body, the environment of the cell does. And what controls the environment of our cells?
Our consciousness.
This has been further shown in the science of psychoneuroimmunology, which explains how our thoughts become chemical and electrical impulses in our body, forming a biological alphabet that sends commands to our cells. Thoughts become things. Our biography becomes our biology.
Our consciousness is the cause of our reality.
If we take a deeper look at the do-gooder, striving to change the world for the better — but getting short-changed themselves — we’ll find a belief system of limitation and fear. The inner talk might sound something like “life is hard, people are unfairly treated, things are unjust… ” And that is the kind of life they experience, regardless of how much they “fight the good fight.”
We don’t get what we want — or even what we pray for — we get what we are in consciousness. Life is not fair, it’s lawful. When a person eats a healthy meal, but underneath it is motivated by fear or self-loathing, the law of consciousness sees a fearful, self-loathing person and magnifies that, drawing more of that to them.
The universe is blind to your actions but acutely aware of the thoughts behind them.
This isn’t to say that actions aren’t important. Action is crucial to creation. As the saying goes, “Faith without works is dead.” But the reverse is also true: “Works without faith are dead.” By all means, act from your highest standard of good. But be sure to align yourself with an equally high state of consciousness.
If you find yourself saving money out of fear of loss, shift that perspective so you’re saving from a state of inspiration and abundance — you’re saving “for” something, like financial freedom or a new house, rather than saving “from” something, like the fear of financial ruin or losing your house.
This week, pay closer attention to the consciousness behind your actions. Notice when what you say matches what you’re thinking and feeling and when it doesn’t. Become aware of when your actions are in alignment with your deeper beliefs and when they contradict them.
Take some time to journal about the beliefs, self-talk and emotions behind the key areas of your life — particularly the ones where you’re experiencing challenges. At the end of the week, review this. You’ll discover that the picture you’re seeing outside is a reflection — if only faintly — of the mental/emotional picture you’re living inside. You’ll also start to see the gap between what you’re trying to create — the actions you’re taking — and what you’re really creating with your thoughts, feelings and mental images.
The awareness of this gap is the beginning of real change. Set the intention to close that gap. Work with this material daily. And as your thoughts, feelings, words and actions become in integrity with your highest vision, you’ll become one of the “good people” who has good things happening… and you’ll be unstoppable.
Stay Inspired!

10 Ridiculously Easy Healthy Things You Could Be Doing Right Now (But Probably Aren’t)

*Warning: curse-words below.

I consider myself a relatively realistic healthy person, if that’s a thing.

I eat pretty clean, but I also adore craft beer. I exercise daily, but I also love a good Sunday nap. I have a fetish for all things grammar, but curse like a sailor. So, you know: balance.
It’s my jam.
Through my professional and personal studies—learning, reading, practising, and good old fashioned trial and error, I’ve uncovered the simple truth that no dieting company really wants you to know:
Being healthy is ridiculously easy.
Yes. Easy.
As in, not complicated or expensive, and even more simple than a meal delivery system. It is, quite simply, a series of a few key choices in your day-to-day habits.
Here are my top ten most immediately impactful and user friendly suggestions.

The Healthy Shit List:

1. Eat Real Food.

If you’re reading this, you probably already know the hazards of processed food. You might understand how the more a food is processed the more energetic and nutritional value it loses, therefore the lower the benefit to your body. And yet, come snack time, I’ll bet you’re headed straight to the wholegrain, agave-sweetened, fiber bar, because it’s fast. And healthy, like it says on the label.
Except it’s not.
See above. That’s not real food, as I’m explaining. Ditto for the low-fat, all-natural quick and easyprocessed product packing fifteen ingredients with more syllables than a Mary Poppins song.
Walk away from the wrapper. Choose something that is in (or close to) its original form. Find an apple. Eat some nut butter that’s made from—only nuts. Slice up some cucumbers and drizzle with lemon juice and olive oil.
Taste the rainbow, but um, not the kind that comes with a monogram.

2. Don’t like vegetables? Drink cold-pressed juice. Like vegetables? Drink cold-pressed juice. Don’t G.A.F? Drink cold-pressed juice.

This is not just the most amazing thing that has ever happened to my digestive system, it’s also the most produce my body has ever had on a daily consistent basis. Like, ever, ever.
I get my juice from a local small business that uses all organic vegetables and (very little) fruit to bottle juice that pack six pounds of produce in one bottle. I’ve replaced my morning meal with a green juice and a nut milk or blended upgraded coffee similar to Bulletproof coffee, and I feel amazing.
Skin, energy, digestion, well-being, you name it—it’s been improved since I starting drinking cold pressed juice every day.
Two things to note: First, cold pressed juice offers different benefits than juicing using a Vitamix or similar blender. These are two entirely different processes. Second, juice can be expensive ($10 a bottle and up) but many locally owned places offer a chance to work for free juice, so you get to learn how the juice is made while you scrub (these) beets for four hours, and walk home with a week’s worth of happiness in a bottle.
Win. Win. #Winning.

3. Eat, drink or swallow your vitamins.

I’m not talking Flinstones chewables here, friends. Nor am I talking about that crap on the shelves of every major “nutritional” store. I’m talking high quality, high potency, legitimate vitamins, minerals, omegas and aminos.
Pay up for the good shit and your return on investment will show up via deposits of energy, clearer skin (and thereby fewer make-up purchases), an elevated and stable mood, fewer illnesses and ailments and healthier digestion (so, like, less crap in your body. Literally).
Vitamins, it’s what’s (be)for(e) breakfast.

4. Ditch your car.

So, guess what? Before there were cars, and saddles, and wagons and wheels in general, we had this amazing mode of transportation available for our use at any given time. In Sanskrit, we’d call these your hastas, in Spanish, los pies, and in English—yeah, your feet.
Walking. It’s a real thing. Try it. Often. To coffee. To lunch. To work. To pick your kids up from school. After dinner.
It is the simplest, easiest, most generally accessible tool we have available and offers more gentle and direct benefits to the body than nearly any other form of exercise. Want to up your game? Ride a unicycle. Want to be more practical? Go for something with two wheels, brakes, handlebars and pedals. Want to really get fancy? Ride your bike to public transportation, take the light rail, ride to work from there, lock it up then take the stairs up to your office.
You have lots of places to go: use your own motor.

5.  Laugh with (not at) other people.

Name the last time you belly-laughed with your best friend. Now name the last time it was over conversation, and not while staring passively at a screen.
Laughter is soul medicine.  Conversation, connection and joy bring our chakras into balance, give our endorphins a giant high five, fill us up with life energy and get our blood moving. Plus, depending on the company, you might even get a decent ab workout. Shut down so you can check in—engage in real life conversation, experience the give and take of dialogue and find out what the man behind the tweet is actually saying.
Trade the emoticons for some real life emotions.

6. Yin yoga.

Oversimplified, this means taking long, deep, quiet stretching poses. For serious.
It’s very simple, you can do it at home, on your office floor, in the car, on an airplane—ahem, speaking from experience here. Even if you only take ten minutes of your day to do three poses,  Yin yoga offers the opportunity to break up connective tissue that’s impacting your range of mobility and flexibility, move stuck energy, and hit deep relaxation. It improves sleep, digestion, mobility, and best of all, your attitude.
If you want to move better, hold still for a little while.

7. Meditate.

Two minutes of silence. This, you can do. Don’t even start with me. Actually, no, do start. Just not the whining, more of the sitting and the nothing and the quiet.  This is legitimately life changing shit. So like—do it.
Sit down, shut down and be in it.

8. Move it on out, every single day.

When we experience stress or trauma we store it in our tissues, and it can manifest as illness or physical pain and suffering. The best way to release it is to literally shake it out of your body.
This means we don’t avoid it by pretending it didn’t happen, but we don’t feed it either by giving it power and making it the big fucking deal of the day. Simply recognize what’s come into your space, acknowledge what’s bothering you, feel into it and move it out with breath and movement. Yoga is great for this, as is dance, obviously. Running might be a good option for others. Even going to the batting cages can provide an somatic release.
Whatever you do, don’t be an ostrich, shake your tail-feather.

9. Go the Fuck to Sleep.

Yes, this is the name of a hysterical children’s book.
It’s also real, true, legitimate advice. No matter how you justify it, you are literally stealing from tomorrow’s happiness by skipping rest at night. Your brain, your endocrine system and your sympathetic nervous system, just to name a few, all depend on adequate rest. Lack of sleep results in decreased function, productivity, energy and eventually, happiness. It makes us more susceptible to injury and illness, encourages swelling, poor eating habits and confusion.
All of this, as you well know, puts you in direct alignment to become Captain Crankypants by noon. Lay down, turn the lights out and get some rest.
If you don’t protect your sleep time, who will?

10. Drink lots water.

Not eight-glasses-lots (that’s not actually that much), but like, actually a lot of water. I know you know this. I also know you’ve come up with reasons why you can’t, don’t or won’t. Better hydration, clearer glowing skin, fewer toxins in the body, more energy, a clearer mind—nothing I have to say here about the benefits of getting more H2O in your life is particularly novel.
Except, quit making excuses and just drink more fucking water.
The End.

3 Reasons Why You Manifest the Same Problem Again and Again

Have you had the experience of dealing with the same problem again and again? Because the Law of Attraction governs our lives, our thoughts and feelings are what create our reality, and this includes our problems! Sometimes we have a negative focus that has become so strong it causes us to attract the same problem repeatedly.
So, why might we have a negative focus like this? Below are three common habits that cause problems to repeat themselves through negative attention. If you find you find yourself experiencing the same problem again and again, check to see if any of these behaviors are at play:
1. Talking or complaining about the problem:
For many of us, this is the strongest reason why we attract problems repeatedly. Most of us talk a lot, and we tend to tell the same story again and again. Complaining about a back problem, a bad relationship or a rude boss can become addictive, and this generates a lot of extra magnetism for these negative circumstances.
The good news is that it’s fairly easy to stop complaining. At first, biting one’s tongue might be a bit uncomfortable, but with a little bit of practice it is easy to limit the negative talk.
For more information on this concept, read this article: “Why Talking About Our Problems Is Our Greatest Addiction.
2. Obsessively thinking about the problem:
While most people in society believe that worrying is critical for our survival, nothing could be further from the truth. When we worry about our problems we generate more momentum for them, and we find ourselves further and further away from the solutions we need.
Though many of us understand that negative thinking causes problems, changing our thoughts is still often easier said than done. Our thoughts move at a very quick pace and come without much effort, so “thought control” can be a bit tricky.
It is important to remember that even though you are able to change many of your intentional thoughts, you will have still have some unwanted unintentional thoughts here and there, and that’s ok. A few negative thoughts won’t ruin your life, so please give yourself some leniency on this one, especially in the beginning.
With that being said, when we find ourselves completely obsessing about a problem, we can do some deliberate distraction, and this can have a very profound effect over the situation at hand.
The next time you find yourself worried or anxious about a problem, simply tell yourself something along the lines of “I can solve this problem later, but right now I am going to focus on something a bit more uplifting.” Then, find an activity to do that brings a a little more joy into your life.
You could watch a funny movie, call a good friend, or practice a hobby that makes you happy. You could also listen to uplifting music or do some light exercise.
Distraction is a great habit to develop because it gets you pointed in the right direction vibrationally. If each time you find yourself obsessing, you take a step back and distract yourself into a higher vibration, you will generate a habit that helps you bounce back from negative thoughts quickly in all areas of your life.
With practice, it will become your default behavior to distract yourself when your thoughts become too negative. When positive distraction becomes your automatic response to obsessive negative thinking, you will see a powerful change in the quality of your reality.
3. Acting out of fear:
Our actions have the ability to affect our vibration and our beliefs. Not only are our actions a reflection of our vibration and how we feel inside, but they also have the power to change our vibration and how we feel inside.
For example, perhaps you’ve heard that when you are feeling down you can simply practice smiling to improve your mood a bit. Even though the smile isn’t genuine, the simple act of smiling mirrors itself inside with an emotional boost.
This works because our our moods and our actions work together in tandem. Altering our moods will change our behaviors, and altering our behaviors will also change our moods. Therefore, by changing our behaviors regarding a problem, we change the way we feel about the problem, and then the problem manifests differently in our reality.
For this reason, the actions we choose to engage in have a tremendous effect on the circumstances we are attracting. When we are struggling with the same issue repeatedly, we can usually find some behaviors that indicate fear of the problem. By reducing and eliminating these fearful behaviors, we can consciously alter our beliefs and vibration regarding the subject.
For example, if I have been struggling to stay healthy, it is possible that I am behaving as if I am afraid of getting sick. Perhaps I have been obsessively washing my hands, taking immunity vitamins and avoiding all of the sick people in my life. In turn, this negative, fearful focus (ironically) draws sickness closer to me.
Why is this? It’s because I am sending a message to the universe that is screaming “I am afraid I am going to get sick!”
Again, we get what we focus on, whether it’s something we want or not! When we take fear-based actions to avoid sickness, all the universe knows is that we are thinking about getting sick. So, though these actions are taken with the intention of reducing illness, in many cases they actually increase illness.
It’s always a good rule of thumb to evaluate our choices in our actions, especially when things aren’t going our way. When we are attracting repeated unwanted events it’s wise to pause and ask ourselves if we are running toward what we want or running away from what we don’t want.
It doesn’t matter which direction we are running in. As long as we are running we are strongly focused and therefore in the mode of attraction.
Now, this isn’t to say you shouldn’t wash your hands, wear a seatbelt or take your vitamins. If these actions make you feel better about the situation, by all means do what you have to do. Feeling protected is a higher vibrational place than feeling exposed and vulnerable is, so if taking a protective action helps you feel safe in the moment go for it.
That being said, if you find you are making great efforts to avoid your fear, these obsessive actions are absolutely part of the problem. Like obsessive thoughts, obsessive actions are dangerous because they indicate a strong focus on the unwanted.
Always remember, the greatest protection you will ever have is vibrational alignment. When you are projecting a very high vibration, you are 100% safe, and will only attract wanted events and circumstances. If you feel that you need protection on a regular basis, take some steps to raise your vibration and work to lessen your dependency on protective actions.
So when you find yourself trapped in Groundhog’s Day and the same problem is popping up repeatedly, take some steps to evaluate and adjust your approach. Avoid talking about the problem, distract yourself from obsessive thoughts and reduce the tendency to act out of fear.
This three-pronged approach will slow (and eventually stop!) the negative attention that is drawing the same problem in your life again and again.
As a final note, please remember it’s always best to crawl before you walk. Go easy on yourself if at first you struggle to stop talking about a persistent problem, or if your thoughts or actions are still worrisome and fearful. We aren’t aiming for perfection here, we’re simply trying to slow down the negative momentum.
Every time you choose higher vibrational thoughts and actions you reduce negative attraction, so pat yourself on the back for your achievements and give yourself a pass when you slip up. Eliminating an established negative attraction requires some practice and, of course, some patience with oneself.
If you’ve had success in eliminating any negative cycles from your life, I’d love to hear your story. Comment below and share your thoughts.

Compersion: Could You Joyfully Share Your Lover?

“I want to love you wildly. I don’t want words, but inarticulate cries, meaningless, from the bottom of my most primitive being, that flow from my belly like honey. A piercing joy, that leaves me empty, conquered, silenced.” ~ Anais Nin

The Urban Dictionary defines “compersion” as a feeling of joy when a loved one invests in and takes pleasure from another romantic or sexual relationship.
Compersion can be thought of as the opposite of jealousy, a positive emotional reaction to a loved one’s other relationship.
In a non-sexual situation, it would be the type of joy that one would feel for a sibling or child or friend who embarked on a satisfying relationship with a new partner.
I’ve read that compersion is a new concept, although I cannot agree: the word itself might be new to our modern lexicon, but the concept and execution of it is hardly a discovery.
For most, compersion is a wacky concept—“I couldn’t do it…why would you do it anyway?” is a normal emotional reaction.
Normally, if one’s partner were to find another, we would feel jealousy. It’s natural—or should I say, we areconditioned—to feel set aside, hurt, cheated on or not enough. Therefore, most of the time a secondary relationship to our main one is normally conducted in secret.
But I’d like to explore the concept of compersion as it applies to couples who knowingly and joyfully engage in secondary relationships. Although it probably seems far fetched, I encourage you to think about what it would be like to feel joy for your partner were they to engage in an authentic relationship with another person?
Are we as a society that is ready to embrace non-traditional relationships? Can we set aside our egos and insecurities to fully find joy in our lover’s emotional and sexual journeys?
From the very beginning of our lives, we are conditioned towards ownership and attachment. It’s almost subconscious. We push stuffed toys and blankets on our little ones and even take pride in the way they become attached to them.
Although we are taught to share our earthly possessions, the thought of sharing our relationships are is mostly out of the normal realm of thought.
In the past, a marriage contract included some essence of ownership. There was security in knowing whom one belonged to.
Of course, it was the women who were property and whose fidelity was valued.
Most relationships still function on the expectation that we could not allow room for exploration beyond the confines of the twosome.
I am fascinated by this idea of compersion—so much so that I have written an entire novel based on polyamory.
I am speaking to you about it from a position of having practiced compersion myself.
My partner and I have long found the idea of experiencing love on an expanded level soul-fulfilling. Our relationship is based on great emotional, spiritual and physical intimacies.
When we look at each other, we see a human being who is infinitely capable of love.
We strive not to own each other but to experience an unconditional awe of the others existence.
Any one of our close friends could attest to the fact that if we seek to experience someone outside of our relationship it’s because of a desire to first, fulfill my need of a female lover and secondly, to understand each other on a level that would not be possible within the confines of a traditional marriage.
We’re seeking a spiritual intimacy through an unconventional pathway.
Let’s be clear, nothing is missing, there is no shortage of spice, we simply love each other without borders. There is such freedom in this that, often, we are accused of hermiting together, choosing to stay in for long stretches in only each others company.
In true freedom, there is incredible stability.
There’s no ownership in our relationship unless it’s a game we play. Honesty? Yes. Loyalty in other forms? Of course.
We are enough.
Compersion is like a feast for the spirit.
Every now and again, we long for that joy that comes when we see the other person loving someone else.
Compersion—there is nothing like it.
I am best at illustrating what I mean in story form. And so I share with you an example of compersion as written below.
In an expanded emotional state, we can be free to share our love with joy.

The Gift

You watched her with eyebrow raised. Coffee cup in your sun kissed hands, your face a study in rugged beauty. I know that she was arrested by your sinful lips. I am arrested by your sinful lips.
You’ve always had a look that spoke of elegance and utter control. The wicked wind blew her scent to our table and you passed a hand through your hair as she approached; pushing its length away from your face, your tongue slipped out and you wet your lips.
Hungry. That was your signal. You were hungry.
She approached, staring into your eyes. a dare of a smile playing at her lips.
“Hello.” She said, as if she knew you, as if we had planned this and she was to have breakfast with us.
You stood and took her hand, then turning, you introduced me to her. I blushed, tingling all over.
“This is my Celeste.”
You knew each other—well. It was unspoken, but unmistakable. You wanted her for me. My wild and ancient self, awoke. My instincts on fire.
“What is your name?” I whispered as she bent down to kiss my cheek.
But I knew her name of course; it was Temptress. She smelled of hyacinths and lilacs, a scent so feminine, so pure, it belied the dark of her solicitous soul.
“Would you like to sit?” I asked and motioned to the chair, breathless, aware of your keen eyes upon me.
I loved you fiercely in that instant. Thanked you silently for this gift of woman. The thing I cannot live without; the surrender of a stunning female at my feet. And you knew me so well.
Your joy hinged on mine, and your handsome face spoke it in volumes. Our trust in each other was the base of our adventure.
I longed to fall into the echo of her lust. To see your mouth take hers.
A day can stretch into eternity when one is thirsty for the normally forbidden.
You left me alone as I made preparations; to our bed, to my heart, to the space we needed to carve open so that she might fit into our love.
I knew that you were anticipating falling deep into the emotions you experienced when witnessing my happiness. And I yours. This was your spiritual gift to me, the meeting of three souls with only love and joy present in every moment. If there was jealousy, I trusted you to share that cup of honesty with me.
The witch that I am wanted to hand her a brew of persimmon tea; to lay her naked on my bed and massage her intimately with oils of my choosing.
A bowl of blackberries from the hedgerow sat on the table. I thought of feeding them to her and lashing my tongue against hers so I could taste Nature through her. But you handed her a joint rolled tight and a glass of wine when she arrived that night, her black dress a simple backdrop to her luminescence.
She sat at the edge of the chair; head flung back, mouth looking for kisses, her hair knotted in your hand.
You watched me, so confident, as my mouth made its way to hers. You watched me drown. Drift away from you on a current of bliss.
Your eyes lit up with pleasure, my happiness yours, my experience your reward.
But I knew that where the river spilled into the ocean, you would be waiting for me, and tomorrow or one day, I would be only yours once more.
I believe that with compersion as the intention, such love can be a mindful experience for all involved.
“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions—we cannot be free.”
Thích Nhất Hạnh.
